First State Ballet Theatre.
First State Ballet Theatre participates in the Red Clay Title I Schools Arts Alliance, which provides students with exposure to a variety of art forms. Residencies at Shortlidge Elementary and Joseph E. Johnson Elementary School comprise four days of dance classes and a performance/meet and greet with the company dancers. Students learn basic ballet and dance vocabulary, are exposed to the classical ballet repertoire, and learn about what it takes to become a professional dancer.
"We love our work and partnership with First State Ballet. Students are able to experience a multifaceted program. First grade students participate in movement and dance instruction. In addition, dancers from First State Ballet come to our school and perform for the scholars. The culmination of the program is a trip to The Grand/Baby Grand where we tour the stages and observe a dance class in session. Sometimes we are lucky enough to see a dress rehearsal as well. Our scholars enjoy this program, especially our boys! We are grateful for this opportunity for our scholars and look forward to continuing to grow the program." - Mary Barbro, Joseph E. Johnson School
