The Lewes Historical Society promotes and advocates the preservation, interpretation and cultural enrichment of the Lewes region, through museum exhibits, educational programs, historical research and publications.
Sitting prominently on the corner of Front and Bank Streets, the Cannonball House has witnessed centuries of Lewes’ history unfold and served many purposes over its storied past. Dating between c. 1740 to c. 1750, the Cannonball House is one of the few intact examples of a form prevalent in Lewes during the late-18th and early-19th centuries with architectural elements influenced by the building traditions of the diverse cultures that inhabited Lewes.
After proudly enduring a British Naval bombardment in 1813, the Cannonball House has now come to represent the mission of the Lewes Historical Society and Lewes' proud maritime heritage.
Following an analysis by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), the Cannonball House now requires extensive repairs and maintenance to ensure the sustainability of this beloved landmark.
The structures requires funding to address: Copper gutters
Storm window repair and replacement
Shutter replacement Basement encapsulation
Sump pump
Floor joist shoring Fencing Tree work Siding replacement
While these projects are costly, we are striving to raise $10,000 through this initiative so that we can start this critical restoration process. We are so grateful for your generous support!
