Laura's Big Adventure - Commuter Challenge Edition!

A fundraiser for 3rd Annual Commuter Challenge! (Urban Bike Project of Wilmington)

$2,550 raised from 42 donors

$2,500 goal

I’m Laura Wilburn.

I’m fundraising for 3rd Annual Commuter Challenge! (Urban Bike Project of Wilmington).

This is a story about redemption. Two years ago, I won the weight title hauling 221 pounds up the hill. Last year, I ran my bike off the road and had to hike it up the hill. I'm back from that embarrassing blow and determined to recapture my former glory!! But this is also a story of adventure, because you just never know what will happen out on the cobbles. So I hope you will join me this year for a multi-sport adventure extravaganza. The more money you donate, the more (and heavier) outdoor adventures I'll come prepared for.

At $50..........Birding: Never underestimate the adventure you can find looking at birds. I'll wear a pair of binoculars around my neck

At $100........Biking: Well obviously. I'll carry tools and spare parts enough for a multi-day trip, plus u-lock and rain gear

At $250........Rock Climbing (Indoor): We're going to the gym! Harness, climbing shoes, chalk bag

At $500........Rock Climbing (Outdoor): Add a rope and climbing helmet

At $1,000.....Packrafting (Unsafe): I'll carry my inflatable boat, inflation bag, and four-piece paddle.

At $1,500.....Packrafting (Safe): If you care for me, you'll get me this far so I can also bring along a life vest and crocs (protect those feet!)

**FUN FACT: My pack raft has a load bearing capacity of 300 lbs! Which means I could, theoretically, strap my bike to the front of the raft, put in at the Van Buren Street bridge, run the rapids down to the Market Street bridge, get out and complete the bike course from there. USA Cycling rules do not specifically mention packrafting a portion of the course as cause for disqualification, so it's a gray area.

At $2,000.....Backpacking: The ultimate adventure! I'll carry my backpack with everything I need to survive a night, including sleeping bag, sleeping pad, cook stove, mess kit, matches, food, rope, and a first aid kit.

At $2,500......Day at the Beach: It might not be the most adventurous adventure, but it is the heaviest. I'll hitch the cart to my bike and carry two folding chairs, a beach inflatable, and a sun shade

BONUS: $3,500.....Skiing: If we make it this far together, I will rig my downhill skis and ski boots to my bike but it won't be pretty.

Adventure Circle:
Want to try a new outdoor activity but don't know where to start? If you donate at least $250 to my fundraiser, I will take you on a local adventure of your choice! Gear, planning, and instruction (if needed) included. I teach children how to adventure for my day job, so you'll be in good hands! Choose from the following:
  • Packrafting the Brandywine: We'll raft from the Market Street bridge to the Riverfront, then bike back.
  • Bikepacking to Lums Pond: We'll bike from Wilmington to Lums Pond and spend the night in the campground.
  • Rock Climbing: Choose between the Delaware Rock Gym or Alapocas Run State Park.
  • Mountain Biking: We'll hit the trails at White Clay Creek State Park.
  • Birding (not recommended): Look, I don't know much about birds. But we can learn together!

Thank you for supporting my fundraiser, and more importantly thank you for supporting the work of Urban Bike Project. Together we can create equitable access to mobility in Wilmington and share the joy of bicycling with over 2,000 Wilmington youth and adults every year.
