Help Preserve Delaware's Rare Plants

A fundraiser for Delaware Botanic Gardens

$985 raised from 13 donors

$23,000 goal

The Delaware Botanic Garden is reintroducing the exceptional to the Delmarva peninsula.  Our team is on a mission to raise funds to preserve rare, native plants by adding to and expanding its plant collections.

Due to increased habitat loss and fragmentation, many of Delaware's native flora risk becoming endangered or even extirpated (i.e locally extinct) from the landscape.

We compiled a list of 35 rare or extirpated species (Species Conservation and Research Program, 2018) that would add to the already dynamic habitats in the garden. Propagating and introducing rare plants requires special, informed care. DBG horticulturists have successfully propagated rare species including Lobelia elongata (longleaf lobelia) and Eryngium aquaticum (marsh rattlesnake master). We are currently incorporating them into our collection based on the specific habitat requirements.

Your donation will help us to curate and re-establish declining plant populations in Sussex County, Delaware, in order to inform future conservation efforts with best practices. A complete list of the rare plants we hope to acquire can be found on our website.
