The Brain Injury Association of Delaware is the only organization in the State of Delaware that provides education, support, advocacy, and resource education to survivors and families affected by brain injury. Brain injury can occur in numerous ways including medical conditions such as stroke, seizure or tumor; surgery; or events that result in a lack of oxygen to the brain such as near drowning, strangulation or cardiopulmonary arrest (known as acquired brain injury or ABI)  Others are a bump, jolt, or blow to the head, or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain (known as TBI or traumatic brain injury).  Brain injuries are unpredictable in their consequences and can affect the way we think, act, and feel.  Each year in the United States, an estimated 2.87 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury, resulting in 56,800 deaths, 2,529 of which are children.  An estimated 812,000 children were treated in emergency departments in 2014 for concussions or traumatic brain injuries (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2019). Surveillance Report of Traumatic Brain Injury-related Emergency Department Visits, Hospitalizations, and Deaths—United States, 2014. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services).
In Delaware, approximately 20,000 people are affected by a brain injury. Increased public awareness and understanding of the consequences of brain injury will ideally lead to the prevention of injuries including concussion, while enhancing the recovery process for survivors.

Please support BIAD in their mission to create a better future for all through brain injury prevention, education, advocacy, and support.
