We are BUZZING with excitement over the Brandywine Zoo's Valentine's Day fundraiser- Bee Sweet! We need your help to name the bees in the Zoo's hive!
We aren’t just WAXING poetically, as pollinators, bees play a vital role in our ecosystem in Delaware and around the world. They pollinate approximately 130 agricultural crops in the US including fruit, fiber, nut, and vegetable crops. Foragers must collect nectar from about 2 million flowers to make 1 pound of honey and the average honey bee will actually make only one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime. A honey bee can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 miles per hour, which means it would have to fly around 90,000 miles - almost 470 times from the zoo to the furthest point south in Delaware and back again – to make one pound of honey. That's a lot of pollination and a lot of bees to make everything work!
Our Brandywine Zoo bees need your help. As little as $5 goes a long way, but for $10 (or more), you can give our bees some names. So BEE positive!
For a donation of:
$10: Name a bee after your Honey
$25: Name up to three bees
$50: Name up to seven bees*
$100: Name up to ten bees PLUS the names you submit will be entered into a drawing to name the Queen Bee!*
*Donors who give $50 or more can choose to receive a plush bee toy and two guest Zoo passes. A Zoo representative will contact donors with more information.
Don’t have a Honey to name? You can still help! For a $10 donation, you can also name a mealworm after your ex - many of the Zoo's animals including the scarlet ibis, bearded dragon, and golden lion tamarins LOVE mealworms!
When making your donation, you can leave us your bee name (first names only) by selecting the "Do you want to recognize someone with this donation?" Make sure you check “Yes, make this in honor or memory of someone,” where you can enter the namesake(s) of your bee(s), using commas to separate each name. Please do not submit slurs, curse words, or culturally insensitive words; they will not be displayed on our website. You can denote if it is a bee or a mealworm you would like to name at the start of the names, following these examples:
Bee - Maria, Tom, Sam, Mealworm – Frank
Bee – Joe, Leslie
Mealworm – Charles, Ted, Leonard
All named bees and mealworms will be shared on the zoo's bee colony page, as well as the winner of the Queen Bee naming!
All donations to this fundraiser will go to support the Brandywine Zoo, the bee colony, and planting new pollinator habitats in the Zoo.
We hope you COMB through your list of current and former honeys and will BEE generous.
Thank you for supporting the Brandywine Zoo and bees everywhere!
We can't wait to be SWARMED by your submissions.
Stay BeeUtiful,
The Brandywine Zoo
