The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Delaware Chapter is determined to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. Funds raised for the AFSP Delaware Chapter go to critical research, education programs, advocacy, and support for those affected by suicide.
$1,000 would allow AFSP to bring at least 4 community programs to the Delaware Community. Our programs address topics like what is suicide and how can we prevent it, what are risk factors and warning signs, how to reach out for help, strategies for managing mental health and being proactive about self-care, and how to help someone in crisis.
In 2021, we lost 48,183 Americans to suicide. A 4.79% increase compared to 2020. In Delaware we lost 137 people to suicide in 2021. An increase of 13, compared to 124 lives lost in 2020 and an increase of 26, compared to 2019. In Delaware, we lose more than three times as many people to suicide than in alcohol related motor vehicle accidents. And for every suicide, it is estimated that at least 25 people attempt to take their life. Our Chapter provides training programs like Talk Saves Lives, a community based presentation, that cover the general scope of suicide, the research on prevention, and what people can do to fight suicide. Attendees will learn the risk and warning signs of suicide, and how together, we can help prevent it. We also provide resources for those impacted by a loss to suicide to provide support and hope.
