About The Elizabeth W. Murphey School

Mission: Our mission, in the words of our founder, is to be a, "fostering home where children who would otherwise be neglected may have a happy childhood; and where they may have the fullest opportunity to develop toward useful and efficient lives".

Our Goal
At the Elizabeth W. Murphey School, we understand that teenagers and young adults face challenges as they transition into adulthood. In an effort to help our children develop skills for a productive future, we aim to provide them with meaningful internships and job experiences. These opportunities not only help them learn responsibility but also allow them to explore their passions and uncover their potential. We believe that by supporting them in this critical phase of their lives, we can empower them to shape a bright and fulfilling future.

What we do and why?
In the State of Delaware alone, about 600 children enter foster care each year. With fewer foster homes available, group care is essential. Murphey provides children with a safe & stable place to call home. We want nothing more than for children to have an enjoyable childhood. Providing family-like support and guidance gives them greater chances to prosper in the future.

Residential Cottages
At Murphey School we have four residential cottages, each able to welcome up to 10 children aged 7-18, each with a private bedroom. Our compassionate house parents provide 24-hour awake care and support, ensuring every child feels safe and loved. House parents and staff are committed to teaching the children basic skills, modeling appropriate social interactions, and creating a nurturing environment where children can thrive and grow.

Independent Living/Transitional Living Program
Our Independent Living Program staff is dedicated to supporting young adults between the ages of 16 and 23. We understand that transitioning into adulthood can be challenging, and safe stable housing is scarce, which is why we've opened four transitional living homes. Case workers help young adults locate, secure and utilize the essential services they need to help them build positive and fulfilling lives. Together, we strive to empower these young adults as they embark on their journey toward independence.
