Society of St. Andrew Delmarva

Developing community-based grassroots gleaning networks, SoSA leverages volunteer labor to pick, dig, or gather fresh produce remaining in fields after commercial harvest, providing a “no regrets” solution benefiting the environment by reducing food waste; farmers through tax benefits; volunteers through opportunities to make a difference in their community; feeding agencies through receiving zero-cost healthy produce for their clients; and low-income, asset limited persons with nourishing food to eat. SoSA has four decades’ experience, with a proven track record across multiple states, and already recovers and distributes 20-30 million pounds of food each year, at a cost of 10-12¢ per pound. Our newest office is based in Salisbury, MD, and distributes food across the entire Delmarva peninsula, including more than a quarter million pounds of food in Delaware in 2024.

Our regional office on the Delmarva peninsula allows us to build intentional relationships with local growers, volunteers, and local hunger agencies to get good food into underserved communities. In 2023, our first full year on the peninsula, we shared more than 1.3 million pounds of good food with local agencies across Delaware, Maryland, and Eastern Shore Virginia.  In 2024, that number increased to more than 1.4 million pounds shared with more than 100 agencies!
