The RBVFC are a volunteer fire company protecting a full time population of 30,000 people and a seasonal population of over 300,000. We cover 32 square miles, including Dewey Beach and part of Henlopen Acres. We operate three fire stations and respond to over 4,700 fire, rescue and EMS calls every year. All our fire and rescue calls are staffed by volunteer firefighters. We have 15 full time career EMT’s who operate 2 ambulances 24/7/365. Both our firefighters and EMT staffs are highly trained and provide the very best professional services. Our goal, since 1906, is to provide professional fire, rescue and emergency medical services to our communities and our visitors.
Due to the rapid housing developments in Sussex County the area is experiencing an increase in the population. This population growth will add to the number of calls already handled by the fire fighters and EMS. However, much of the gear utilized by our volunteers to fight fires is old and becoming less reliable.
Consequently, we are raising funds to purchase updated equipment that will serve the firefighters and EMS. We think that by having the proper tools we can best serve our growing population in our community.
Some of the items that we plan to purchase include a ladder truck, and gear for our firefighters.
The Tower/ladder truck that we will be replacing has served our community for over 25 years. The total cost of the new truck is $1.6 million. To provide gear to one individual firefighter cost almost $21,000.
Additionally, the RBVFC collaborates with the RBVFC Auxiliary on fundraising events held throughout the year. These events include the Jazz Fest,The Sea Witch Festival, and the Greyhounds to the Beach. The Rehoboth Beach Fire Station 1 operates our museum which is open for individuals and families to explore the history fire prevention and firefighting in Rehoboth Beach.
