About Indoor Track Delaware
Mission: Indoor Track Delaware is a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness for the need of an indoor track/sports complex in the Diamond State. Comprised of coaches, parents and concerned citizens, Indoor Track Delaware believes such a venue will address the unmet demand of high school track athletes and local college teams, attract sports tourism dollars from the Mid-Atlantic region, and provide the flexibility to promote community health and well being for Delawareans of all ages.
- Every year since 2014, roughly 1,800 track and field athletes from 60 Delaware high schools traveled to MD, PA, VA, and NY to compete during DIAA's indoor track season because Delaware doesn't have a 200 meter indoor track.
- Delaware lost its only 200 meter indoor track in 2013 when the University of Delaware turfed over its indoor track for use as a practice field for football and other UD sports teams. Every 200 meter indoor track meet during DIAA's boys and girls indoor track season is an away meet. Delaware high school teams drive on average one (1) to two (2) hours each way just to compete.
- Since Delaware has no 200 meter indoor track, the travel burdens of distance, time and tolls prevent families, friends and neighbors from watching their children, friends and classmates compete.
- From 2014 - 2020, the DIAA State Indoor Track & Field Championships was held in Prince George's County, MD nearly two (2) hours away. This year due to COVID, DIAA's indoor Track Championship will be held outside in Dover, Delaware.
- An indoor track/sports complex can turn a market failure in the Mid-Atlantic region into a market opportunity here in Delaware, as there is no 200 meter indoor track with hydraulic banked turns and seating capacity for 3,500+ spectators, south of New York City, NY and north of Virginia Beach, VA. With 35 million people within a 120 mile radius of Delaware an elite indoor track/sports complex will attract sports tourism dollars and fill empty Delaware hotels and restaurants from December to March.
- When indoor track season is over and the turns are flattened, a variety of other indoor sports (e.g., e-sports, wrestling, volleyball, basketball, cheer tournaments and camps) will use the facility the rest of the calendar year.
