Home for the Holidays Campaign

A fundraiser for Ministry of Caring

$3,000 raised from 11 donors

$10,000 goal

As families and friends gather at Thanksgiving and for seasonal celebrations, it’s easy to forget that for a small percentage of the population there may not be a warm bed, a hot meal, or cheerful welcome.

Your support on Giving Tuesday is even more impactful this year, as the Jessie Ball duPont Fund is generously matching funds raised online for a maximum of $10,000. Your gift will support the 18 programs at The Ministry of Caring that provide shelter, meals, housing, childcare, and job placement.

While the need for community services is year-round, it’s this time of year, as we gather with our nearest and dearest, that many of those on the edges of society and those who are in the greatest need face their biggest challenges:  keeping a roof over their heads, getting enough to eat, paying their utilities, affording groceries, finding work, avoiding addiction, getting counseling, applying for benefits,  and fleeing abuse.

In Wilmington, Delaware, homelessness, hunger, and poverty continue to challenge the fabric of our community — affecting children, seniors, and families alike, day in, day out. At The Ministry of Caring, we’re driven by a belief that regardless of anyone’s background, history, or circumstances, every person deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, kindness, and compassion.

We began our services in 1977 with the opening of Mary Mother of Hope House, the first shelter for homeless women in our region. Our commitment to those in need is reflected in real numbers. In 2024 alone, we served more than 151,000 meals through our Emmanuel Dining Room and provided emergency shelter for 937 individuals.  Read our latest Impact Report here.

Our stable, secure housing programs support families, seniors, and people living with disabilities, including HIV/AIDS. Each day, our childcare and employment programs empower individuals to rebuild their confidence and boost their skills, supporting their long-term transformation and a move towards a brighter, more secure tomorrow. We ask you to give as generously as you can and join us on Giving Tuesday as we champion the right of everyone in need to find a welcoming Home for the Holidays.

About Ministry of Caring

Mission: The mission of The Ministry of Caring is, simply, to serve the needs of the poor with dignity, respect and love. We welcome the hungry for nutritious daily meals in our two dining rooms. We also provide emergency shelter for the homeless, job placement and assistance, high-quality childcare, and affordable housing for lower-income seniors. The Ruth Balick Distribution Center is a collection, storage and distribution point for donated food, clothing, furniture and household items that are given at no cost to anyone in need.  In July, we celebrated the groundbreaking of our latest facility, Villa Maria, which will provide 74 additional units to those in need of safe, secure housing. Plans are in the process to create our fifth senior affordable housing program, Village of Francis and Clare, a 51-unit high rise. Our philosophy is that the poor should never be treated poorly.
