Emergency Essentials for People with Disabilities
Organization Mission:
Our Mission at The Freedom Center for Independent Living is to empower persons with disabilities by enabling them to gain effective control and direction over their own lives.
Emergencies can happen at any time, and it's crucial to be prepared, especially for individuals with disabilities. What our Emergency Essentials Program will do:
- Create a Plan: We will work with our Consumers to develop a personalized emergency plan that includes evacuation routes, communication methods, and a list of essential contacts.
- Build a Kit: We will assemble an emergency bag for both sheltering in place OR evacuations. The bag will include necessary items such as medications, medical supplies, food, water, and so much more! The more funds donated, the bigger the kit we can supply.
- Stay Informed: Finally, the Consumer will be registered for emergency alerts and Smart911 so the emergency responders will know where they are located in case of a natural disaster or worse.
Our goal is to raise $1000 in 24 hours on March 6th-7th.
Here are the costs of some items we'd like to include:
$30 - Staying hydrated - 3 days of water/food
$20 - It's Personal - toiletries and sanitation

Final appeal:
To drive home the necessity we're addressing at the Freedom CIL, below is a real story of real people who perished due to lack of disaster preparedness:
In the California LA fire of January 2025, a dad, who was an amputee, stayed behind with his son, who had Cerebral Palsy. The family desperately tried to get anyone to go back for their two loved ones, but it was too late. There was no plan for the family. There was no plan with the EMS. There just was no plan for this disaster. Below are two links you can read about this devastation:
