Do More 24 Delaware is a 24 hour day of giving designed to help nonprofits raise more money and engage new donors. But why donate to the Sierra Club? The list of the Sierra Club's accomplishments is long (https://www.sierraclub.org/accomplishments), but most importantly it has always been a space for people who love our planet to come together and advocate for it.   Today, the future feels increasingly uncertain. Our federal administration is actively working to weaken Delaware’s ability to regulate clean air and develop wind power (a critical effort that would enhance our energy grid’s reliability). Instead, they are pushing dependence on oil and gas while cutting jobs for environmental scientists, national park workers, climatologists, and environmental justice advocates. In the past few months, I've often felt overwhelmed and burnt out by the relentless wave of bad news. However, my work with the Sierra Club has been a source of hope and motivation. The Delaware Chapter is leading incredible initiatives to protect our environment and build a more sustainable future.
As a new Executive Committee member, I've had the privilege to get involved with Rethinking Delaware—a coalition of environmentalists, homebuilders, and advocates working together to promote smarter land use that benefits both people and the climate. We're advocating for walkable, bikeable communities with access to public transit. Instead of cutting down trees for new developments, we're pushing to build in already developed areas—prioritizing increased density to make use of existing infrastructure rather than raising taxes to fund new roads and schools. We're also working to make it easier and more affordable for developers to create these types of communities, with a strong focus on addressing Delaware’s affordable housing crisis.
